Learning Through Playdough

Tuesday 16 June 2026

Supporting fine motor development

This week in Nursery, our pupils have been exploring learning through playdough. Playdough is a fantastic hands-on resource for supporting fine motor development, helping children to strengthen the small muscles in their hands in preparation for early writing skills.

To build on this, we added in extra learning opportunities by incorporating shapes and numbers into the activities, helping to reinforce early mathematical understanding in a fun and engaging way. The children were encouraged to roll, pinch, squash and mould the dough into different forms, developing both creativity and control.

Practical Learning

Earlier in the week, the children also helped to make the playdough themselves. They carefully measured and mixed the ingredients, following simple instructions and beginning to understand basic concepts of quantity and sequencing. This practical experience not only supported their mathematical thinking but also gave them a real sense of ownership and excitement when using the finished dough.
