A roarsome finale to our dinosaur topic

Planting a little bit of magic

There was great excitement in the Nursery this week as we brought our dinosaur topic to a truly unforgettable end.

After reading the wonderfully imaginative story How to Grow a Dinosaur, something very mysterious happened… A small packet of “dinosaur seeds” fell out of the book! The children immediately knew what to do. With great care and curiosity, they planted the seeds in the school grounds and spent the week eagerly wondering what might happen next.

Digging, discovering and exploring

Throughout the topic, the children engaged in a variety of activities that helped develop their learning across the Early Years curriculum. They explored knowledge and understanding through fossil digging, matching dinosaurs to their natural habitats, and investigating toy dinosaurs in sand and mud. In communication and language, they listened to dinosaur stories, shared which dinosaurs were their favourites, and described how dinosaurs look and move.

The children loved counting dinosaur toys and eggs, comparing big and small dinosaurs and sorting them by colour, size, or type. They even measured footprints using blocks. Pupils painted pictures of dinosaurs and even moved like dinosaurs during music and movement activities.

A very special surprise

One afternoon, the children returned to check their “dinosaur seeds” — and to their amazement, the seeds had grown into a full-sized dinosaur! Thankfully, she was extremely friendly and loved meeting the children, who were delighted and fascinated by their enormous new visitor.

Moments like this capture the spirit of learning in the Early Years at Wellesley. Through stories, imaginative play and hands-on experiences, children are encouraged to explore their curiosity and develop a genuine love of learning. Our Nursery environment nurtures confidence and creativity, allowing children to follow their interests while being guided by experienced and supportive staff.

The dinosaur visit was a magical and memorable way to conclude our topic — and judging by the smiles and excited storytelling afterwards, it is a moment the children will remember for a very long time.
