Enjoying movement every day
At Wellesley Nursery, we believe that physical activity plays an essential role in children’s early development. Our pupils take part in PE lessons twice a week as part of the timetable, giving them regular opportunities to move, explore and develop confidence in their physical abilities.
These sessions focus on developing fundamental movement skills, which form the building blocks for many different sports and physical activities later in school. Through carefully planned and engaging lessons, children practice core movements, build fine motor skills, and develop important abilities such as coordination, balance and ball skills.

Running, jumping and having fun
In each lesson, pupils enjoy activities that encourage them to run, jump, throw, strike and kick, helping them to strengthen their bodies while learning how to move with control and confidence.
To make the sessions even more engaging, lessons are often built around imaginative themes. Children might move like animals, go on a pretend trip to the seaside, or take an aeroplane ride during a gymnastics session. They practice balancing, making shapes with their bodies and exploring the space around them, all while developing their awareness of movement and the environment.

Building confidence through play
Although the activities feel like play, they are carefully designed to introduce the key movement patterns used in sports such as gymnastics, athletics, football, netball and cricket. This early exposure helps children build the skills and confidence they will need as they move through the school.
Above all, PE at Wellesley Nursery is about enjoyment, exploration and developing a love of movement. By encouraging children to be active in a supportive and fun environment, we help them build healthy habits and confidence that will benefit them for years to come.
