Exploring the outdoors together
At Wellesley Nursery, we love our Wednesday Walks — weekly excursions into the Wellesley Woods. Surrounded by 70 acres of woodland, the children have a wealth of space to explore, supported by access to our Woodland School classroom — an eco-friendly space that provides the perfect base for outdoor learning and developing important skills. Pupils wear their all-in-one splash suits so they can splash in muddy puddles without worrying about their Nursery clothes, embracing the outdoors come rain or shine.
Spotting signs of the seasons
Last week, the children made the most of the brighter weather and went on a walk to look for signs of the new season. They spotted flowers, buds, and blossoms beginning to appear, and eagerly took photos and picked plants to add to our growing “Seasons” display board in the Nursery. This board helps the children notice and celebrate the changing seasons, showing off their observations and discoveries from week to week.
The walks are also a fantastic opportunity to encourage language, curiosity, and teamwork. As one child said, “Look! The buds are tiny but they’re going to grow into big flowers!” Another added, “I can see a blossom on that tree — it’s pink!” and a third exclaimed, “I love jumping in this puddle!”
Learning through adventure
Outdoor learning is at the heart of Wellesley Nursery. Pupils spend a large part of their day outside, exploring, discovering, and enjoying the natural world around them. With the Woodland School classroom as a base, our Wednesday Walks combine adventure, creativity, and learning in a safe and inspiring environment.
