Learning through the water
At Wellesley Nursery, we believe that learning through experience is one of the most powerful ways for young children to grow in confidence. One of the highlights of the week for many of our pupils is their swimming lesson in the school’s on-site pool, which forms part of the regular Nursery timetable.
Led by a qualified swimming teacher, these sessions are designed to introduce children to the water in a calm, supportive and enjoyable way. At this stage, the focus is not on perfect technique or formal strokes, but on helping children feel happy, relaxed and confident in the water. Through games, songs and fun equipment, pupils learn how to move safely around the pool while enjoying the experience of being in the water with their friends.

Growing confidence and independence
As the term progresses and confidence grows, children begin to explore new skills. They practice blowing bubbles, putting their faces in the water and jumping in safely, all while learning how to move around the pool with increasing independence. Activities that strengthen leg kicks, floating and climbing out of the pool unaided are gradually introduced, helping to build both coordination and water confidence.
For children who feel ready, the swimming teacher may begin to reduce the use of flotation aids, such as discs and noodles, allowing pupils to develop their balance and independence in the water at their own pace. However, there is never any pressure to progress quickly — the priority is always that children feel comfortable, safe and happy.

A foundation for the future
By the time pupils move into Reception, many have developed strong water confidence and are ready to begin exploring more challenging swimming activities. The early experiences they gain in Nursery help create a positive relationship with the water that supports their future swimming development.
Above all, Nursery swimming at Wellesley is about building confidence, encouraging independence and having lots of fun along the way — and judging by the smiles at the poolside each week, it is certainly making a splash!
